Roland Bürli, PhD: Senior Director, Scientific Alliances
Dr. Roland Bürli leads the BioFocus Scientific Alliances team with the primary objective of seeking new business opportunities for integrated drug discovery collaborations. He also plays a leading role in particular existing alliances, especially those dedicated to a therapy for Huntington’s disease, a severe neurodegenerative disorder.
Roland studied chemistry at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich (ETH). He remained at ETH for his PhD thesis in carbohydrate chemistry under the supervision of Professor A. Vasella. Subsequently, he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Professor P. B. Dervan at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, USA) working on various aspects of sequence-specific DNA minor-groove binding ligands. Roland then joined Genesoft (South San Francisco, USA), a startup company with a strong focus on developing antibacterial agents with a novel mode of action and later Amgen (Thousand Oaks, USA), where his team advanced several projects from early hit discovery through late-stage lead optimization. Roland joined BioFocus at the beginning of 2008 as Project Director in Medicinal Chemistry and since then has worked on several integrated programs. He is co-author of over 65 peer-reviewed publications and patent applications.
